Cosmic Phenomena: an exhibition of concrete painting
'Concrete painting and not abstract because nothing is more concrete, more real, than a line, a color, a surface.'
It is in these terms that the members of the Art Concret group, formed in 1930 in Paris by Theo Van Doesburg (1883-1931), claim a form of non-figurative art that has deliberately broken with any process of progressive abstraction of aspects of the real world, to favour the direct and reasoned handling of the plastic constituents of the work of art. Concrete painting indistinctly designates entire sections of geometric abstraction, and even organic or biomorphic abstraction.
